Ensuring safety

Kashmir uses heating devices and gadgets ranging from traditional stoves and room heaters to modern electric blankets to warm homes. These devices provide much-needed comfort, but failure to manage or misuse them can lead to dangerous accidents, including fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and electrical hazards.

Most of the people are careless about the usage of these heating devices. In most cases, their carelessness is due to ignorance or unawareness.

Unattended space heaters or wood-burning stoves without adequate ventilation are the main culprits. These would, in fact, work silently in allowing poisonous gases like carbon monoxide into the living rooms, causing poisoning. Closed rooms with little airflow become highly prone to such danger.

Fires are caused when electric heaters are overheated and faulty appliances spark up, or poor handling causes it. Many such accidents have even caused the loss of houses and lives among some Kashmiri households.

Such households, particularly those located in rural areas or in the countryside, do not have electrical appliances that have been certified or qualified repair personnel, thus increasing the chances of such accidents.

It is advisable for the residents of Kashmir to opt for heating appliances that are duly certified and have adequate safety measures in place. Heating equipment like electrical heaters and stoves must be installed by licensed installation technicians.

Respective servicing and regular maintenance must be observed to prevent breakdowns. For wood stoves and traditional heaters, such chimneys should be cleared to avoid dangerous accumulation of gases.

Most accident occurrences are when many apparatus connected with one socket are plugged in. When this happens, the load on the electrical system gets too much, thus causing a short circuit or fire. Use power strips that have overload protection and try to refrain from using heaters on ungrounded outlets. Proper ventilation must always go with.

It would be wise to bring about awareness among communities in the Kashmir Valley regarding the efficient application of heating appliances. Preventive measure-proper installation of appliances, and emergency response might bring schools and local groups together with the government to sensitize the community.

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors can provide an extra life to warnings of imminent hazards. These instruments can be bought quite affordably and are very effective devices deployed to detect smoke or toxic gases.
