‘Initiative will improve road safety, reduce congestion’
Srinagar: In a significant move towards efficient traffic regulation, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) has been installed in Srinagar, offering advanced functionalities with minimal human intervention.
SSP Traffic Srinagar, Muzaffar Shah, shared the advantages of the system saying, “Equipped with high-tech cameras, ITMS automatically detects traffic violations such as riding without helmets, triple riding, using mobile phones while driving, over speeding, and driving in the wrong lane.”
“The system ensures transparency by capturing violations through certified cameras and providing evidence such as date, time, and location details, supported by photographic proof,” Shah said.
Addressing previous concerns about disputes at traffic stops, the SSP Traffic stated that the reduced human interface minimizes conflicts.
“This system eliminates altercations between violators and officers, bringing a more transparent and efficient enforcement mechanism. The violator is directly notified and issued a challan with clear evidence,” he said.
ITMS operates seamlessly under varying weather conditions, ensuring uninterrupted monitoring day and night. The system also allows the traffic department to focus its manpower on areas requiring physical intervention, he said.
“While ITMS handles multiple violations, we can divert our attention to other critical traffic issues,” he explained.
The SSP said that ITMS is a step towards modern traffic management, ensuring compliance and reducing unnecessary confrontations. “This is an added advantage, ensuring that genuine citizens are not harassed while violators are held accountable,” he added.
The key features of this initiative include Real-time Traffic Monitoring through advanced cameras to strategically monitor traffic for efficient management and quick incident response.
Smart Traffic Signals is another feature, managed by Intelligent controllers that optimize signal timings based on real-time conditions, minimizing delays.
Similarly through Automated Rule Enforcement feature, over 1,050 cameras ensure compliance with rules, detecting violations like red-light jumping, over-speeding, mobile use, helmetless riding and more.
Also as part of E-Challan System feature, digitized traffic violation processing ensures transparency, efficiency and accountability.
“This initiative will revolutionize traffic management, creating a safer and more efficient urban environment,” said Dr. Owais Ahmed, CEO of Srinagar Smart City Limited.
The ITMS and e-Challan system showcase Srinagar Smart City’s commitment to leveraging technology for a sustainable and citizen-focused urban experience.
