Elected Govt Takes Charge

After six years of President’s Rule, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed the return of an elected government, marking a significant moment in the region’s democratic journey.
This development rekindles hopes for political stability, greater local representation, and an impetus for addressing the aspirations and grievances of the people.
The restoration of an elected government after such a long hiatus offers an opportunity to revitalize governance, foster development, and rebuild the social fabric in a region that has undergone substantial political and constitutional changes.
The last six years were transformative for Jammu and Kashmir, with the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The transition from special status to Union Territory altered the political dynamics, leading to an increased central role in governance and reduced local political activity. This period also saw a restructuring of the administrative framework, changes in land and domicile laws, and a new focus on development initiatives directly overseen by the Centre. Despite much progress being made in infrastructure and development, the absence of an elected government was often seen as a democratic deficit by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
An elected government’s return signifies more than just a shift in administrative control; it represents a revival of democracy in its truest sense. The people of Jammu and Kashmir will once again have the power to hold their representatives accountable, and actively participate in shaping policies that affect their daily lives. It is an essential step toward rebuilding trust between the citizenry and the state. The elected representatives have to act as a bridge, conveying the concerns of the people to the Centre and advocating for policies that resonate with the local populace.
Reviving the economy will also be a priority. The tourism sector, once a significant contributor to the region’s economy, needs a major boost. Promoting Jammu and Kashmir as a safe and attractive destination will be vital for economic recovery.
Additionally, empowering local industries like handicrafts, horticulture, and agriculture can provide sustainable livelihoods and reduce economic distress. The challenge will be to foster economic development while safeguarding the interests of the local population.
The elected government must prioritize an inclusive development agenda, addressing regional imbalances and reaching out to communities across the Union Territory.
Restoring public confidence in democratic institutions will require transparent governance, accountability, and responsive administration.
