Srinagar, Sept 05: Kamran Majid, a 20-year-old snooker sensation is no ordinary talent. A student at DPS Pantha Chowk, Kamran’s journey from casual snooker parlours to competing on the world stage is nothing short of remarkable.
It all started in 2018 when Kamran was just in Class 5. What began as a simple interest in playing snooker with friends soon turned into a passion.
Spending hours at local snooker parlours, Kamran gradually honed his skills. With dedication and relentless practice, he progressed through district and state-level competitions.
His hard work paid off when he won the state championship, setting the stage for his ascent to the national level.
At the age of 20, Kamran’s achievements already rival those of seasoned players. Ranked number 4 in India’s National Junior category, he became one of the select few to represent the country at the World Championship Under-21 in Bengaluru. India, the host nation, saw 41 players participate, but Kamran stood out as one of the eight chosen to represent the country, a proud moment for him and his family.
Kamran’s journey at the World Championship was nothing short of a dream. He climbed to the 19th spot in the world rankings, securing impressive victories against players from Iran and Poland.
His determination and talent made him the first snooker player from Jammu & Kashmir to represent India at this level in 17 years, following in the footsteps of Younus Kuhcay, a local legend in the sport.
But Kamran’s success doesn’t end there. He also represented Jammu & Kashmir at the National Games, held in Goa, a sporting event often referred to as the “Mini Olympics.” This achievement cemented his position as a rising star in Indian snooker.
Reflecting on his journey, Kamran humbly credits his beginnings. “It all started with friends, playing at snooker parlours. Over time, I improved and started competing at the district and state level. I never imagined I’d be here, representing my state and country on the global stage,” Kamran says.
As Kamran continues to rise through the ranks, his story is a testament to perseverance, talent, and the power of dreams. Jammu & Kashmir has found a new hero in Kamran Majid, a young player determined to make history in the world of snooker.
