The recent allocation of Rs 2,093.92 crore by the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways for Jammu and Kashmir marks a significant development for the region’s infrastructure. This investment targets two key areas: widening and strengthening highways, and constructing a ropeway project.
A major portion of the funds, Rs 1404.94 crore, is dedicated to upgrading the critical Rafiabad-Kupwara-Chowkibal-Tangdhar-Chamkot section of National Highway-701. This 51 km stretch, situated in Baramulla and Kupwara districts under Project Beacon, will be transformed into a two-lane highway using the EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) mode under Package I.
The significance of this project cannot be overstated. National Highway-701 serves as a strategic artery connecting Baramulla and Kupwara, facilitating essential logistics movement in the region. Upgrading the highway will enhance its capacity, enabling smoother flow of goods and services. This, in turn, will provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.
Furthermore, the improved highway will play a crucial role in bolstering the tourism sector in North Kashmir. The region, known for its breathtaking natural beauty and proximity to the international border, holds immense potential to attract tourists. A wider, well-maintained highway will make these destinations more accessible, encouraging travel and tourism, which will create job opportunities and contribute to overall economic growth.
The project’s execution under the EPC mode ensures a streamlined and efficient construction process. This approach assigns responsibility for engineering, procurement, and construction to a single contractor, leading to faster completion times and potentially better quality control.
Beyond highways, the allocation also includes funds for a ropeway project. While details are yet to be unveiled, ropeway systems offer a sustainable and scenic mode of transportation, particularly in hilly terrains. This project has the potential to improve connectivity within the region, especially for those residing in remote areas. It could also become a tourist attraction, offering panoramic views and a unique travel experience.
By enhancing connectivity, promoting tourism, and facilitating efficient logistics, this project holds the promise of a brighter future for the region.
The allocation of Rs 2,093.92 crore for J&K’s infrastructure is a welcome step. Upgrading National Highway-701 and constructing a ropeway system have the potential to significantly improve connectivity, boost tourism, and empower the region’s economic growth.
With careful planning and efficient execution, this initiative can pave the way for a more prosperous and well-connected Jammu and Kashmir.
