J&K Police launch decisive war against drug peddlers

Srinagar, Feb 2: In a significant move aimed at curbing the rising menace of drug trafficking, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched a robust crackdown on drug peddlers operating in the region.

The law enforcement agencies are not only apprehending offenders but also utilizing stringent laws to ensure that the culprits face severe consequences for their illicit activities.

Pertinently in the recent past the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in collaboration with various intelligence agencies, have intensified their efforts to dismantle drug networks that have been thriving in the region. The crackdown has involved targeted operations, increased surveillance, and the implementation of stringent legal measures to ensure that the drug trade is crippled at its roots.

According to the officials several high-profile arrests have been made, with individuals identified as key players in the drug trade facing charges under stringent laws. “The police have been utilizing provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act to ensure that the accused are held accountable for their involvement in drug peddling. The NDPS Act empowers law enforcement agencies to impose strict penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines, on those found guilty of drug-related offenses,” said an official.

“In addition to arrests and legal actions, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have adopted a multi-faceted approach by targeting the ill-gotten gains of drug peddlers. Under the newly implemented strategy, the police have been seizing properties and assets acquired through proceeds from the drug trade. This move aims not only to punish the offenders but also to disrupt the economic incentives that fuel the drug business,” he added.

On Thursday Director General of Police R R Swain while chairing a monthly crime review meeting called for a strict and well-planned action against the criminals involved in drug peddling in J&K. “The (narcotic) trade is extremely dangerous, as it not only destroys the younger generation but also is being used to generate funds to support terrorist activities,” the DGP said.

He directed the officers to take strict and well-planned action against the criminals involved in the drug trade.

The DGP also directed them to maintain the record of drug peddlers as well as of drug consumers so that action is initiated in a more comprehensive manner.

He impressed upon the officers to make a master list of repeatedly offending vehicles and also directed for indexing of drivers and vehicles found involved in transportation of drugs. “Classify victims, peddlers and dealers to look forward and background linkages benefiting from the past experiences,” he added.

Notably, the crackdown launched by J&K Police against the drug peddlers  has sent a strong message to those involved in the drug trade, emphasizing that their actions will not go unpunished. “The stringent measures, including arrests, legal actions, and property seizures, serve as a deterrent to potential offenders and signal a turning point in the fight against drug-related crimes in J&K,” an official told Precious Kashmir.
