Srinagar:  The Jammu and Kashmir administration has devised a multi-pronged approach to combat the drug abuse in the region, officials said on Friday.
An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The government is not only focusing on law enforcement measures but is placing a significant emphasis on rehabilitation and support for individuals caught in the throes of drug addiction.”
He said, “Great importance is being attached to adopt a compassionate and holistic approach towards combating drug abuse. Besides taking punitive measures against the drug peddlers critical support is being extended to those who have fallen victim to drug addiction.”
“Treating individuals with empathy and providing them with the necessary resources for rehabilitation has helped them reintegrate with the society and lead normal and fulfilling lives,” the official added.
Notably, one of the key components of the government’s strategy is to strengthen the enforcement of existing anti-drug laws. This involves heightened vigilance, intelligence gathering, and collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies to curb the drug trade. “By targeting the supply chain, the government aims to stem the flow of illicit substances into the region, preventing further instances of drug abuse,” officials said.
Pertinently, Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta while chairing the 7th UT Level Apex Committee meeting of NCORD highlighted the importance of awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse.
He said, “These campaigns aim to create a sense of responsibility within communities, fostering a collective effort to combat the issue at its source. Crucially, the government is investing significantly in the establishment of rehabilitation centers and counseling services.”
Dr Mehta stressed that the focus should not solely be on punishing drug offenders but on providing them with an opportunity to break free from the vicious cycle of addiction. “By offering counseling, medical assistance, and vocational training, the government aims to empower individuals to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society,” he said.
An observer said, “Role of families in the rehabilitation process is pivotal. Support of loved ones is integral to an individual’s recovery. Community-based programs that involve families in the rehabilitation journey can prove very helpful. Collaborative efforts can create a supportive environment for individuals seeking to overcome drug addiction.”
He said, “The administration needs to explore partnerships with NGOs and private organizations specializing in addiction treatment. By leveraging the expertise of these entities the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs can be ensured and individuals would receive comprehensive care tailored to their specific needs.”
