Srinagar: During the past few years the government has placed women empowerment at the forefront of its development agenda in Jammu and Kashmir.
An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The J&K administration has been proactive in prioritizing women’s rights and equal opportunities, in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution. This deliberate focus on women empowerment has led to positive changes that are both empowering and promising for the region.”
Pertinently, the principles of equality, equal rights, and equal opportunities are central to the Constitution of India, and J&K’s dedication to upholding these values is evident in the various initiatives it has undertaken.
Women, constituting approximately half of the population, play a pivotal role in any society’s growth. The J&K administration has recognized this and has thus taken several steps to ensure that women are equal partners in the region’s development journey.
“One of the primary areas where women empowerment has made a substantial impact in J&K is education. The administration has actively encouraged the education of girls, resulting in a significant increase in female literacy rates. By providing access to quality education for girls and young women, J&K is not only fostering individual growth but also building a more informed and skilled workforce that can contribute to the region’s economic development,” said an official.
Moreover, women in J&K have been actively involved in local governance through Panchayats and Municipalities, providing them with a platform to actively participate in decision-making processes at the grassroots level. This participation has not only empowered women but also led to more holistic and inclusive development, as women have brought unique perspectives and priorities to the table.
“Economic empowerment is another aspect that has seen noteworthy progress in J&K. The government has promoted women’s entrepreneurship by providing financial assistance, training, and mentorship programs. This has resulted in the emergence of women-led businesses, contributing to both local and regional economies. The women of J&K have shown remarkable resilience and innovation in sectors such as handicrafts, agriculture, and tourism, making their mark as successful entrepreneurs,” said an observer.
He said, “The healthcare sector in J&K has also been positively impacted by women empowerment initiatives. Ensuring women’s access to quality healthcare services is a crucial component of their overall empowerment. The administration has focused on improving maternal and child health and expanding healthcare facilities in rural areas, benefiting women and their families. This has not only improved health outcomes but also empowered women to make informed decisions about their health and that of their children.”
In addition to these efforts, there has been a strong emphasis on addressing gender-based violence and ensuring the safety and security of women in J&K. The government has established support systems, crisis centers, and legal aid services to assist survivors of violence. These measures are a significant step towards creating a more secure and just environment for women to live and work in the region.
Pertinently, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently felicitated the women achievers who have carved a niche for themselves and inspiring other women to dream and accomplish new heights of success in various fields. “I am proud to say that half of our population has made an immense contribution in the prosperity and growth of UT,” he said.
LG Sinha highlighted several schemes and programmes being implemented in J&K, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which are intended for holistic empowerment of women and realizing their full potential. “We have taken several steps through Schemes of NRLM, Mission Youth, JKTPO, Industry & Commerce for the speedy economic empowerment of women in urban and rural areas,” he had said. “In academics, our daughters are scripting new history and charting a new future with new confidence and a sense of self-esteem.”
