Kashmiri Sufi singer’s latest track creates ripples on internet

Srinagar: Renowned Kashmiri Sufi singer Rashid Hafiz’s recent release, “Meri Jaan,” has gone viral on the internet, sparking conversations among global music enthusiasts.

Salim Sulaiman’s song, ‘Meri Jaan,’ featuring Abdul Rashid Hafiz, marks a significant moment as the Sufi sensation from Kashmir makes his national platform debut.

The track, presented by GoDaddy India on platforms like YouTube and Facebook, unfolds as a captivating fusion of Sufi Hindi and Kashmiri music.

The vocals by Asees Kaur and Abdul Rashid Hafiz, paired with Mithoon’s musical composition, breathe life into “Meri Jaan,” enthralling listeners with its soul-stirring melodies.

Since its debut the song has garnered significant online attention, resonating with audiences worldwide for its distinctive blend of traditional and contemporary elements.

The emotional depth of the lyrics, revolving around love and separation, has struck a chord with listeners.

However, not all responses have been positive. Some Kashmiris criticise the use of auto-tuning techniques in the track, considering it a departure from Hafiz’s authentic Sufi style.

They argue that such experimentation dilutes the essence of his art and disrespects the longstanding musical heritage of Kashmir.

Critics highlight concerns that these modifications undermine the mastery Hafiz holds in Kashmir’s traditional folk music, asserting that his musical prowess should have remained untouched.

Despite the backlash, “Meri Jaan” continues to gain momentum globally.

Hafiz’s rendition of “Ya Tuli Khanjar Maarey,” originating from the 1945 book “Kashmiri Lyrics,’ adds historical depth to his musical exploration.

This recent venture delves into the complexities of artistic experimentation and the challenges faced by artists navigating tradition and modernity in the rich tapestry of Kashmiri music.
