Srinagar: Various initiatives and schemes aimed at making the horticulture sector vibrant in Jammu and Kashmir have helped the farmers to improve their yields and incomes.
According to the officials the new initiatives aimed at promoting horticulture development have enhanced farmer livelihoods. These steps have ensured market access and have infused new life into the horticulture sectors in J&K.
“Steps like providing financial assistance, holding training programs, and the establishment of quality control laboratories to maintain the high standards of Kashmiri produce are helping the farmers shape up their lives,” an official told Precious Kashmir.
Referring to the horticulture sector, the official said, “This sector stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of farmers who depend on it for their livelihood. This vital industry not only contributes substantially to the region’s economy but also serves as a means of sustenance for countless families. From lush apple orchards to flourishing saffron fields, the horticulture sector holds immeasurable importance for the region’s overall development and the well-being of its people.”
Pertinently, for centuries, Kashmir’s fertile land and favorable climatic conditions have made it an ideal destination for horticulture. The region boasts an impressive variety of fruit trees, including apples, cherries, apricots, peaches, and plums. Additionally, Kashmir is also renowned for its saffron production, which is considered one of the finest in the world. The horticulture sector provides employment opportunities not only during the harvest season but also throughout the year, presenting a sustainable livelihood for the local population.
An expert said, “The apple industry is the backbone of the horticulture sector in Kashmir. The region has gained national and international recognition for its high-quality apples, which command a premium price in the market. The apple orchards in Kashmir cover vast stretches of land, ensuring ample job opportunities for farmers, pickers, packers, and sellers. The sector generates employment for thousands of people, playing a crucial role in combating unemployment and reducing poverty.”
“Apart from apples, saffron cultivation is another significant aspect of Kashmir’s horticulture sector. The deep crimson threads of Kashmiri saffron are highly sought after for their exceptional quality and aroma. Saffron cultivation requires intensive labor throughout the year, offering employment to numerous individuals. The industry not only supports small-scale farmers but also provides business opportunities for saffron traders and exporters, further boosting the region’s economy,” he added.
“Beyond economic significance, the horticulture sector in Kashmir also plays a crucial role in preserving the region’s natural beauty. The lush green gardens and vibrant orchards serve as a major tourist attraction, attracting visitors from all over the world. The sector’s aesthetic appeal helps to enhance the tourism industry, leading to increased revenue and employment opportunities in related sectors such as hospitality and transportation,” the expert added.
He said that despite its significance, the horticulture sector in Kashmir faces several challenges like climate change-induced erratic weather patterns, including unpredictable rainfall, hailstorms, and frost, pose a severe threat to crop production.
“During the past few years many new cold storage facilities have come up and the road network has been improved to facilitate hassle free transportation of the yield. The steps taken by the government are allowing the youth to choose horticulture as a source of their livelihood,” the expert added.
