Srinagar: Incessant rains in Kashmir over the past few days caused a flood scare, leaving residents anxious about the safety of their lives and property. However, a welcome respite arrived as weather conditions improved, providing much-needed relief to the people.
Kashmir, known for its serene landscapes and beautiful water bodies, experienced rainfall for the past few days. The downpour led to a significant rise in water levels in rivers, streams, and lakes across Kashmir, raising concerns of possible floods and related disasters and bringing back the memories of 2014 floods.
According to the officials the administration was on high alert, closely monitoring the situation and undertaking necessary measures to ensure the safety of the residents. “Rescue teams were put on standby, equipped with necessary resources to respond swiftly in case of any emergency. Evacuation plans were prepared, focusing on low-lying areas and regions prone to flooding,” an official told Precious Kashmir.
The incessant rains disrupted daily life in several parts of Kashmir and led to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
However, the collective sigh of relief was felt as weather conditions took a turned for the better on Sunday. The rain showers reduced significantly, allowing the water levels to remain stable. The improvement in the weather also brought respite from the looming flood threat, easing the tension among residents.
“Efforts are also underway to assess the extent of the damage caused by the heavy rains in Jammu region. Teams comprising engineers and experts are surveying the affected areas to evaluate the impact on residential buildings, agricultural fields, and other vital infrastructure. This assessment will help in determining the assistance required for the affected individuals and communities,” the official added.
While the threat of floods has subsided for now, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. People living in low-lying areas, near rivers, and on the banks of lakes are advised to stay alert and follow instructions issued by the authorities. The importance of maintaining a state of preparedness cannot be stressed enough, given the unpredictable nature of weather patterns.
An expert said, “As Jammu and Kashmir slowly recovers from the recent scare, the focus should shift to long-term measures aimed at mitigating the impact of heavy rains and floods. Infrastructure improvements, including the construction of robust drainage systems and embankments, should be prioritized to minimize future risks. Investments in early warning systems and disaster management capabilities will further enhance the region’s resilience in the face of such natural calamities.”
