Mental ailments, substance abuse on rise in J&K, experts sound alarm

Srinagar: Experts have sounded an alarm over rise in mental ailments and drug addiction cases in Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
An expert while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The prolonged period of lockdowns, isolation, and economic distress have taken a toll on the mental health of individuals, leading to an alarming increase in substance abuse.”
He said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching effects on the mental well-being of people worldwide, and J&K is no exception. The prolonged periods of isolation, fear of infection, financial uncertainties, and disruption of social networks have contributed to heightened stress levels and increased mental health challenges. As a coping mechanism, many individuals have turned to substance abuse, further exacerbating their mental health issues.”
While addressing a “Health Conclave” in Srinagar recently, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said, “Post Covid pandemic in the Union Territory; the mental ailment and drug addiction related cases have shown a spurt.”
He, however, extended all-out support to the Health and Medical Education (H&ME) department and Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) for addressing both the issues effectively.
Even the study conducted by the IMHANS, post Covid-19 pandemic, has revealed that mental ailments including common mental disorders, severe mental disorders and drug addiction among youth have shown a surge.
Recent reports indicate a rise in cases of drug addiction across J&K. The availability of narcotics, such as heroin, cannabis, and prescription drugs, has become a cause for concern.
“The accessibility and allure of these substances have enticed vulnerable individuals, leading to a surge in addiction cases,” said an observer.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the government and various organizations have sprung into action to tackle this growing crisis.
The J&K administration, according to the officials, has implemented several measures to combat drug addiction and support those affected. “First and foremost, efforts have been intensified to crack down on drug trafficking and illegal drug trade. Strict surveillance and monitoring have been put in place to identify and apprehend those involved in the supply chain of illicit substances. By targeting the root causes, the administration aims to prevent the easy availability of drugs and curb the rise in addiction cases,” said an official.
Additionally, the government has focused on enhancing the availability of de-addiction centers and rehabilitation facilities. “These centers provide much-needed support to individuals struggling with addiction, offering counseling, detoxification programs, and long-term rehabilitation plans. By expanding the capacity of these centers and ensuring their accessibility to all regions of J&K, the government hopes to provide individuals with the necessary resources and guidance to overcome their addiction,” the official said, adding that awareness campaigns and educational programs have been launched to address the stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse.
“These initiatives aim to educate the public, particularly young individuals, about the dangers of drug addiction and the importance of seeking help. By promoting a culture of open dialogue and support, the government and organizations hope to reduce the shame associated with addiction and encourage individuals to come forward and seek treatment,” he added.
