Rampant use of single-use plastic items poses threat to ecosystem

Srinagar: The rampant use of single-use plastic items during wedding celebrations is posing a significant threat to the fragile ecosystem in Kashmir.
Authorities and environmentalists have raised alarm bells, calling for immediate action to tackle this pressing issue.
Kashmir, often referred to as “Paradise on Earth,” attracts thousands of tourists each year to witness its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. However, the excessive use of single-use plastic items during functions threatens the region’s scenic beauty and delicate ecosystem.
Pertinently, during the marriage functions plastic items such as plates, cups, cutlery, and decorations are used on a massive scale. The demand for convenience often overshadows the environmental consequences, leading to mountains of plastic waste accumulating across the region.
An environmentalist while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The use single-use plastic items have a detrimental effect on the region’s fragile ecosystems.  The non-biodegradable nature of plastic means that these items can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, contributing to land, water, and air pollution. Plastic waste is often irresponsibly disposed of, leading to the clogging of drainage systems, polluting rivers and lakes, and affecting the flora and fauna.”
He said, “We need to educate people about the ill effects  of single-use plastic items. People should opt for eco-friendly alternatives like biodegradable plates and utensils made from sustainable materials. Additionally, efforts should be made to encourage the use of cloth bags instead of plastic ones.”
“We need a collective effort to protect the environment and preserve the beauty of our region. The excessive use of single-use plastic during functions is a major concern, and we must find sustainable alternatives,” he said.
In the recent past community leaders and influential figures who have pledged to promote eco-friendly practices have come forward to make the people aware about the problems that Kashmir is facing due to the pollution caused by the single use plastic items. Some wedding planners have also taken a proactive stance by offering couples packages that include environmentally-friendly options, such as reusable decorations and compostable tableware.

According to the officials the government is considering implementing stricter regulations to curb the use of single-use plastic items. Proposed measures include levying fines on individuals and businesses found violating the regulations and promoting the use of eco-friendly alternatives through incentives and subsidies. “Efforts are also underway to improve waste management systems in the region. The authorities are exploring options to enhance recycling facilities and promote waste segregation at the source. Collaboration between the government, local communities, and non-profit organizations is vital to effectively address the plastic waste issue and promote sustainable practices throughout the year,” the official added.
