Srinagar: Growing population, expanding urbanization contribute to surge in vehicular traffic

Srinagar: With Srinagar witnessing a significant increase in the number of vehicles plying its roads, the need to adhere to traffic laws has become more crucial than ever.
According to the experts the growing population and expanding urbanization have contributed to a surge in vehicular traffic, posing challenges to road safety and highlighting the urgency for responsible driving practices.
The picturesque city of Srinagar has experienced a remarkable growth in its vehicle population in recent years. “The increasing affluence, improved accessibility, and changing lifestyles have led to a greater demand for private vehicles, resulting in congested roads and heightened risks for both drivers and pedestrians,” an observer told Precious Kashmir.
He said, “As the number of vehicles continues to rise, it is essential for all road users to recognize the importance of following traffic laws. Compliance with regulations such as speed limits, lane discipline, and traffic signal adherence is not only a legal requirement but also crucial for ensuring the safety of oneself and others on the road.”
“Traffic congestion has become a persistent issue in Srinagar, leading to longer commuting times and frayed nerves among motorists. However, it is vital to remember that patience and adherence to traffic rules are key to maintaining order and preventing accidents. Reckless driving maneuvers, such as overtaking in no-overtaking zones or jumping red lights, not only endanger lives but also exacerbate congestion and disrupt the flow of traffic,” the observer added.
In light of the growing number of vehicles, the Traffic Police have taken many initiatives to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. “The authorities have enhanced enforcement measures. The monitoring has been made strict and heavy penalties are being imposed for traffic violations,” said an official.
He said that public awareness campaigns are serving as effective deterrents against reckless driving and are promoting a culture of responsible road behavior.
He advised the pedestrians to use designated crossings and exercise caution when navigating the roads. “Promoting public transportation options can alleviate the strain on road infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion. Encouraging the use of mini buses, sharing cabs, using e-rickshaws can not only mitigate pollution but also enhance road safety by reducing the number of private vehicles on the road,” he added.
An expert said, “City planning and infrastructure development should also keep pace with the growing vehicular population. Expanding road networks, implementing traffic management systems, and creating designated parking areas can significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.”
He emphasized on the need to create awareness about fostering a culture of responsible driving. “Schools, colleges, and community organizations should collaborate with traffic authorities to impart road safety education, emphasizing the importance of obeying traffic laws, practicing defensive driving, and understanding the risks associated with reckless behavior,” he added.
“It is crucial for all stakeholders, including motorists, pedestrians, and authorities, to work together to ensure road safety. By prioritizing road safety, implementing effective traffic management strategies, and fostering a sense of civic responsibility, Srinagar can achieve the twin goals of accommodating its growing vehicle population while ensuring the well-being and security of its residents,” the expert added.
