‘Integration of technology into agricultural practices transforms J&K’s farming landscape’

Srinagar: The integration of technology into agricultural practices has transformed the farming landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to improved productivity, enhanced crop yields, and sustainable farming methods, officials said on Monday.
An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Farmers in the region are harnessing the power of modern technology to overcome longstanding challenges and pave the way for a prosperous future.”
He said, “Traditionally, farming in Jammu and Kashmir was predominantly manual, reliant on traditional knowledge passed down through generations. However, with the advent of innovative technologies, farmers are embracing cutting-edge solutions that optimize resource utilization, streamline operations, and mitigate risks associated with climate change and erratic weather patterns.”
Another official said, “One of the key areas where technology is making a significant impact is precision agriculture. Farmers are adopting advanced systems such as remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor and analyze field conditions, soil moisture levels, and crop health. Armed with this real-time data, they can make informed decisions on irrigation, fertilization, and pest control, reducing resource wastage and optimizing yields.”
“Additionally, the use of drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and sensors has revolutionized the way farmers survey and monitor their fields. These aerial vehicles provide valuable insights into crop health, identifying areas of stress or disease, and enabling farmers to take timely corrective measures. Drones also assist in the efficient and targeted application of fertilizers and pesticides, reducing the overall environmental impact,” he added.

It’s in place to mention here that farmers are embracing innovative irrigation techniques. Traditional flood irrigation methods are being replaced with advanced drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, allowing for precise water application and reducing water wastage significantly.
Smart irrigation systems integrated with weather forecasting data are being utilized to optimize water usage based on actual crop needs and local weather conditions, conserving water resources while ensuring optimal crop growth.

Moreover, farmers in the region are turning to mobile applications that provide real-time weather updates, market prices, and farming advisory services. These apps enable them to stay updated on changing weather patterns, plan their farming activities accordingly, and make informed decisions on selling their produce at the right time and price.
The availability of such information at their fingertips has empowered farmers to improve their profitability and minimize post-harvest losses.

According to the officials another technology-driven initiative gaining traction is the establishment of agricultural e-commerce platforms. These platforms connect farmers directly with buyers, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring fair prices for their produce. Farmers can showcase their products online, negotiate deals, and arrange for hassle-free transportation, thus expanding their market reach and boosting their incomes.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has recognized the transformative potential of technology in agriculture and is supporting these initiatives. “The Agriculture Department has collaborated with various organizations to provide training programs and workshops to educate farmers on the use of technology and its benefits. Financial assistance and subsidies are also being extended to farmers to facilitate the adoption of modern agricultural practices,” the official said.
He said, “The integration of technology in farming practices is not only enhancing productivity but also making agriculture more sustainable and resilient in Jammu and Kashmir. By optimizing resource utilization, mitigating climate risks, and improving market access, farmers are gradually experiencing increased incomes and improved standards of living.”
