Srinagar, June 15: As Doda and Kishtwar regions in Chenab Valley recorded six temblors in a day, experts on Thursday raised concerns about the increased threat of earthquakes in Jammu and Kashmir.
With recent seismic activity and geological studies, it has become evident that the region is susceptible to significant seismic events, necessitating immediate attention and preparedness measures from the authorities.
Several tremors have been recorded in the region in the past few months, prompting scientists to investigate the underlying causes and potential consequences. These tremors, though relatively minor, have served as a wake-up call for officials and the public alike, highlighting the need for comprehensive earthquake preparedness plans.
An expert while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Jammu and Kashmir lies in a seismically active zone due to its proximity to the Himalayan range. The tectonic plates in this region are constantly shifting, leading to significant stress buildup, which can be released in the form of earthquakes. It is imperative that the local authorities take immediate action to protect the lives and infrastructure in the region.”
While Jammu and Kashmir has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past, including the catastrophic quake of 2005 that claimed thousands of lives, recent studies have indicated an increase in seismic activity in the region. The rise in population and urbanization, coupled with inadequate infrastructure and preparedness, present significant challenges in the face of potential earthquakes.
To address these concerns, the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) has initiated a series of measures to enhance earthquake preparedness.
The JKDMA is collaborating with national and international experts to conduct detailed risk assessments and formulate robust disaster management plans. These efforts aim to raise awareness among the public, improve infrastructure resilience, and enhance emergency response capabilities.
“We are committed to protecting the lives and well-being of our citizens. Our focus is on building a culture of preparedness and ensuring that the necessary resources are in place to respond effectively to any seismic event. We urge all residents to remain vigilant, participate in drills and training sessions, and familiarize themselves with safety guidelines,” said an official. In addition to the government’s initiatives, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, and community groups are actively involved in raising awareness about earthquake preparedness. They are organizing workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately during earthquakes.
As the seismic activity continues to be closely monitored, it is essential that residents remain alert, stay informed through official channels, and actively participate in preparedness initiatives.
“By working together, Jammu and Kashmir can be better equipped to face any future earthquake and minimize its impact on the region’s population and infrastructure,” said an official.
