Ecological harmony

Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with nature’s rich resources. At the same time, it is confronted with multiple challenges of a fragile ecosystem which requires collective action to create a fine balance between man and nature. While climate change is a reality, J&K is experiencing it in the form of extremes which are challenging and endangering the existing ecosystem. The climate pattern in Jammu and Kashmir has seen discernible change recently.

There is no denying the fact that climate change is making itself felt in various manners. It is no longer a theory that can be disputed but it is a reality that has to be dealt with.

It is being manifested not just by warmer temperatures but also by changing rainfall patterns. This scenario calls for a need to look at the current situation in J&K more closely and scientifically.

As has been correctly highlighted by official functionaries, there is need for coordinated action and collective partnership as well as making changes in behavior and lifestyle to tackle the impact of climate change and reducing the carbon footprint for protecting the environment and conserving Biodiversity.

Ecological sensibilities, conservation of natural inheritance, sustainable lifestyle and holistic approach for an environment-friendly development path can strengthen the capacity to deal with the environmental crises and reverse the environmental degradation.

The future generations must contribute to maintain the delicate balance of nature. Ecological harmony, pragmatic steps like synergy between economic growth and environmental protection for projects can effectively address climate change.

Given the frequent rainfall this year, there is a need to advise farmers and orchardists as regards the steps needed by them in advance.

Human growth has also resulted in the loss of essential ecosystems, such as deforestation to make space for cultivation and habitation. Rare plant and animal communities are being wiped out by logging, overfishing and the illicit wildlife trade. Agricultural nutrients, soil erosion sediments and waste plastic debris, on the other hand, all contribute to pollution.

In daily life choices, one needs to pick the most sustainable options. There is need to follow the principle of reuse, recycle, reorient and diversify to reduce pollution. It is high time for incentivizing and promoting sustainable alternative materials for redesign and repackaging of products to protect the environment.

While no living creature cannot exist without nature, there is need accelerate actions and bring behavioural changes in lifestyles.
