Suicide rate in J&K demand immediate action: Arif Laigaroo

Srinagar:  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ex-Youth State Secretary and Constituency In-Charge, Habba Kadal, Arif Laigaroo Friday said the escalating suicide rates in Jammu and Kashmir demand immediate action.

“The future of our region and the lives of our people are at stake. It is incumbent upon us, as a society, to come together and address this crisis head-on,” he said in a statement issued here.

Laigaroo stated that, “The statistics are staggering. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data reveals a 26-fold increase in the suicide rate in Jammu and Kashmir. These numbers represent lives lost, dreams shattered, and families devastated. We cannot turn a blind eye to this tragedy.”

He added that, “The factors contributing to this distressing situation are complex. Unemployment, poverty, gender-based inequalities, societal expectations, and mental health issues are just a few of the challenges our young people are grappling with. We must confront these issues urgently.”

Calling for an urgent action plan in this regard, the PDP leader said, “To reverse this trend, we need a comprehensive approach. Our government, community leaders, mental health professionals, and civil society organizations must work hand in hand to implement effective measures. We must prioritize the creation of economic opportunities, foster inclusivity and acceptance, invest in mental health services, and engage community and religious leaders in raising awareness.”

He noted that, “Time is of the essence. Each passing day, more lives are being lost to suicide. Let us come together as a society, united in our determination to save lives and create a brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir. The time for action is now. Let us mobilize resources, engage stakeholders, and implement evidence-based strategies. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.”
