Covid Resurgence

There is a resurgence of Covid-19.  In a way, it shows the novel coronavirus is far from being defeated.

There are 75 active covid-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir. Nine of them were added on Sunday only, according to Union health ministry data updated on Monday

In overall context, India logged 1,805 new coronavirus cases, while the active cases surpassed the 10,000-mark after 134 days.

The daily positivity rate has been recorded at 3.19 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 1.39 per cent.  The active cases have increased to 10,300, the data updated at 8 am stated. On Sunday, the health ministry had put the count of active cases at 9,433.

The death count increased to 5,30,837 with six deaths, one each reported by Chandigarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in a span of 24 hours, and two reconciled by Kerala. The total tally of Covid cases is 4.47 crore (4,47,05,952), the data stated, the data added.

In this context, union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan who chaired the high-level meeting stressed on ramping up testing with a higher proportion of RT-PCR, and whole genome sequencing of positive samples.

Urging people to follow COVID-19-appropriate behaviour at all times, he stressed the need to increase administration of precaution dose, especially in the vulnerable population group.

On the preparedness front, the centre has advised states to undertake mock drills across all health facilities on April 10 and 11 to ensure operational readiness of hospital infrastructure, including oxygen cylinders, PSA plants, ventilators, logistics and human resources.

As per health experts, the fresh spike in cases is not a harbinger of a new wave.

While frequent changes in genome structure are part of the natural life course of viruses, experts stress there is no need to panic.

They have underscored that there is no need to panic as the fatality rate and the number of hospitalisations are not increasing any significantly.  While it is true that Covid-induced restrictions imposed in the past three years merely delayed the inevitable, the people need not to panic.

The current surge is being attributed to Omicron XBB sub-variants. A fresh US study says that vaccines and boosters are effective against these highly transmissible strains. The five-fold strategy including test-track-treat-vaccination-Covid-appropriate behaviour should be continued in earnest as it has proved to be a success.
