Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday claimed to have arrested seven drug peddlers in Anantnag & Baramulla and recovered contraband substances from their possession.

“In Anantnag, a Police party from Police Station Aishmuqam at a checkpoint established near Exchange crossing Aishmuqam apprehended three drug peddlers identified as Arif Hussain Raina son of Mohammad Afzal Raina, Yawar Ahmad Magray son of Nazir Ahmad Magary both residents of Ainoo Aishmuqam and Javid Ahmad Merasee son of Bashir Ahmad Merasee resident of Ishnard Govass Aishmuqam. During checking, 7Kgs of Charas-like substance has been recovered from their possession,” a police spokesman said.

In Baramulla, a police party led by In-charge PP Delina during naka checking at Delina Ghat intercepted a vehicle bearing registration No. DL3CAD-2779 with three persons on board, police said.

“During checking, 35 grams of Heroin-like substance was recovered from their possession. They have been identified as Jan Mohammad Lone @Jagawar son of late Mohd Maqbool Lone resident of Shaheen Mohalla Delina, Nadeem Ahmad Mir son of Bashir Ahmad resident of Darpora Delina and Maroof Ahmad Khan son of Mohd Younis Khan resident of Ramgai Uri.”

Similarly, a police party of PP Mirgund during naka checking at Harthrat Pattan intercepted a suspicious person who tried to flee from the spot but was apprehended tactfully. During the search, 35 grams of Charas and 2.2Kgs of Poppy Straw like substance concealed in a carrying bag were recovered from his possession. He has been identified as Javid Ahmad Mir son of Ali Mohammad Mir resident of Chenabal Pattan, police said.

Police said that all the arrested drug peddlers have been shifted to respective police stations where they remain in custody. Accordingly, police said that cases under relevant sections of law have been registered in respective police stations and further investigation has been initiated.

Meanwhile, police urged people to come forward with any information regarding drug peddling in their neighbourhood. “Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” police said.
