Increase In Flu Cases

Of late, respiratory viruses are spreading as people gather indoors due to the colder weather. One of the other reasons apparently includes goby by people to Covid-19 Appropriate Behavior. In fact, the cases are higher than the last two years. Social distancing, wearing face masks, hand washing, travel restrictions as well as closing schools effectively reduced transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A senior doctor has said that four viruses including H3N2, H1N1 and two B viruses are circulating this year with H3N2 more dominant.

There have been five viral pandemics in the last century and four were due to influenza, and the one due to COVID-19. The earlier pandemics encountered by people were caused by H1N1, H2N2, and H3N2 viruses and the last one in 2009 caused by a swine-origin virus. With every pandemic a new influenza virus emerged that started circulating in a human population that was immunologically naive.

Infants and children having their first encounter with the virus have the greatest incidence of severe enough infection to require medical attention. Although the highest illness rates occur in children, most deaths occur with infections of the elderly. In addition, immunocompromised individuals of any age are at greater risk of adverse outcomes.

Usually, the pandemics over-burdened health care systems and disrupted societies globally. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a 99% global reduction in the diagnosis of influenza. Also, from 2020, global mortality rates from influenza fell to record levels during the influenza seasons in most parts of the globe, according to reports. However, as social restrictions were lifted and the winter season began, it was expected that influenza would re-emerge and this is what has happened.

Presently, the air is cooler and less humid, which normally helps some viruses grow and spread more easily and thereby increase the number of viral infections.

According to the experts, in view of covid appropriate behaviour (CAB), the incidences of other respiratory infections were less but since the end of third Covid-19 wave, there has been a rise in respiratory infections not only in elderly but in young. Most of the infections were due to viral infections, more so influenza.

As advised by experts, people need to take precautions and if needed, visit a doctor instead of self medication.

Also getting an annual flu vaccine is the best protection against influenza and its potentially serious complications, especially for those who have pre-existing conditions such as asthma, diabetes, obesity and other chronic illnesses.
