Srinagar: Police and Army on Wednesday claimed to have killed an infiltrator along the Line of Control in Kupwara district.
“Police in Kupwara along with Army have foiled an infiltration bid in Forward Sudhpora along LoC in Karnah area by neutralising a (militant) of LeT. Incriminating materials and arms/ammunition have been recovered from his possession,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.
He said at about 0100 hours, based on specific input about possible attempts of infiltration, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army’s 3/8 GR in Forward Sudhpora area of Karnah Kupwara.
During the search operation, he said, an infiltrator was challenged by the joint party who started firing indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated, leading to an encounter.
In the ensuing encounter, one LeT militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He was identified as Mohammad Shakoor son of Mohammad Yaqoob resident of Syedpora Leepa (PaK).
“Incriminating materials and arms and ammunition including 01 AK-47 rifle (short), 02 AK-47 Magazines, 01 Pistol (9mm), 02 Pistol Magazines, 9mm 45 rounds, 02 Chinese Grenades, Pakistani Currency, Identity Card etc. have been recovered from his possession,” he said, adding, “All the recovered materials have been seized for the further course of investigation and a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Karnah. Further investigation into the matter is in progress.”
Meanwhile the army said that there were two infiltrators and one of them went back.
“Alert troops on anti-infiltration grid intercepted two (militants) trying to infiltrate into own side in the forward area close to the Line of Control. At around 1:45 AM on 26 Oct 22, the infiltrating (militants) were fired upon, leading to elimination of (one of them),” a defence ministry spokesperson based here said. However, he said, taking advantage of darkness, the other militant managed to flee back. (GNS)
