While inaugurating the 6th Senior Asian Pencak Silat Championship being held in Srinagar, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, assured the sportspersons that the government is committed to take every possible step to develop a strong winner’s instinct among them.
During the past two years, many sportspersons from J&K have proven their mettle in different fields by bagging medals and securing top ranks. Performance of athletes in national and international events has improved. They have earned 540 medals in the national events and 17 medals in the International events.
Last year, more than 1.7 million children and the youth participated in various sporting disciplines and this year, the number is expected to go beyond 3.5 million. The overwhelming participation clearly indicates resurgence of sports in Jammu and Kashmir.
The sports events in J&K are no more confined to traditional sports like cricket, hockey and football. The sports persons are being provided with an opportunity in every field and by bringing laurels they have proven beyond any doubt that they can compete at any level.
The government has been encouraging talented sportspersons by making adequate resources available to them. The frequent sporting events being held across Jammu Kashmir have helped in promoting robust sports culture in the Union Territory. The helmsmen has formulated and implemented policies which are helping the sportspersons.
Infrastructure has improved, outstanding coaches have been hired to train the budding players. This has helped to nurture the talent of sports persons to the best possible extent. They J&K youth have neither disappointed their coaches nor the people. Their performances have made everyone proud.
To encourage the sportspersons the government has been offering career options to them so that they remain financially stable. Sportspersons are no more treated shabbily in J&K. The helmsmen are paying attention towards their needs, demands and requirements. Their performances and contributions are being acknowledged.
After seeing the success of sportspersons, parents are also encouraging their children to participate in the sports activities and are helping them to choose whichever sport they like. The old mindset that sports won’t yield anything has changed as the youth are emerging as super stars.
