The Central Government has advised the news websites and OTT platforms to refrain from broadcasting advertisements of online betting platforms as the activity has been termed as illegal. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting observed that promotional content and advertisements of betting platforms are still visible on certain news and OTT platforms and it needs to stop.
Betting and gambling are illegal activities and publicizing these activities cannot be legal acts. Online betting has become an addiction for many people and has led to hundreds of people losing their entire savings.
The government’s decision to ban the advertisements would at least prevent the people from getting easy access to the online gambling and betting sites. It’s a welcome decision.
The youngsters easily get lured to these online betting and gambling sites as these platforms give tempting offers and then involve them so grossly that they tend to lose their entire money.
According to the law gambling, betting and lottery are illegal acts and these cannot be legalized in any way. It’s not only the law which prohibits gambling and betting, even the society disapproves of it. Many people have lost everything by indulging in gambling and betting. That’s why stringent laws have been framed to curb these activities.
The betting scandals in international and domestic cricket had shocked the entire cricketing fraternity as it exposed many cricket players who were considered as role models. Many cricketers were found involved in match fixing and spot fixing scams. The bookies used to lure the cricket stars by offering them money and they used to get lured. But during the past few years rules have been made stringent due to which incidents of match fixing have come down.
Banning advertisements of online gambling and betting sites could be a beginning of launching a crackdown on these illegal activities which are ruining the entire society. The government alone cannot curb these activities, society has to rise up to the occasion and create awareness about the ill effects of gambling and betting. People have to help the law enforcement agencies to curb these menaces so that youngsters don’t fall into the trap of fraudsters and they concentrate on important things in their lives.
The government should ensure that the strict vigil is kept on online websites and OTT platforms and if any of these sites display betting or gambling acts they should be dealt with sternly. To end online betting and gambling is mandatory to secure the future of the coming generations.
