Historic culture vanishing

By: Farheen Manzoor
Our Kashmiri Culture is unfortunately on the verge of being vanished. We the people of Kashmir are 24× 7 listening to Punjabi songs, English songs and Korean songs and Therefore getting involved into Punjabi and Foreign cultures. Our youth are going away from their own culture. The Heritage culture of Kashmir is vanishing from our society . Kashmiri youth are ashamed of speaking their mother tongue i.e Kashmiri language. Actually this is not the fault of our youth, But the mistake of our elders who continuously stop their child when they try to speak in Kashmiri . They avoid speaking in Kashmiri in front of their children rather they speak mostly in English in order to make their children more fluent in English. This is a good practice to make your child a good language learner but not at the cost  of sacrificing your own language. They even teach their children to stay away from the children who speak Kashmiri . This is really shameful. They think that children speaking in Kashmiri are not worth . They come from backward areas.
Even they don’t teach them about Kashmiri culture, which is a diverse, beautiful and historical in itself. They don’t let them know about the Kashmiri architecture, its beautiful gardens , and its diversity of food. The current youth is unaware of Jamia Masjid’s history. They don’t know who built it, when it was created – Nothing at all. This is the situation for us as a youth. What will we pass on to the next generation if we don’t know a bit about our culture? We may be educated in terms of our academics but we are illiterate in terms of our culture. We should try to learn about our own culture, then only our society will develop and move forward.
