5-day mega sports festival commences in Gurez

Srinagar:  A five-day mega sports festival commenced in Gurez as part of the Jashn-e-Gurez on Monday, Army’s Srinagar based spokesman said in a statement.
“The event is being organized by the Indian Army in collaboration with Padma Shree Faisal Ali Dar’s Ali Sports Academy and District Administration Bandipora. During the event children and youth from all across Gurez valley will be trained in three new sports like Rugby, PencakSilat and Wushu,” it said.
The event was inaugurated at the Dawar Helipad Ground in Gurez by a senior officer of the Indian Army and SDM Gurez, who kicked the Rugby ball to symbolise the opening of the sports festival, the statement added.
It said the festival is aimed at promoting sports and fitness among the local youth of the Valley and after completion of the training camp, the official district level championship of these three sports will be conducted in Gurez. “This will provide the budding sportspersons of the Valley a greater chance to showcase their talents and be selected for higher level competitions,” the statement said, adding that more than 200 children from Tulail, Kanzalwan and Dawar sub sectors participated on the first day of the event and efforts are being made to include more children from far and wide.
