Samba teacher killed in Kulgam cremated

Jammu: Amidst protests and anger, the lady teacher, who was shot dead by militants in Kulgam on Tuesday, was cremated at her native village Nanke Chak on Wednesday in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The relatives and family members shouted slogans, “Rajni Bala Amar Rahe, Amar Rahe.”

Rajni Bala was posted at a government school in Kulgam’s Gopalpora.

Her husband, Raj Kumar, also a government school teacher, lit the pyre and said that in view of the targeted killings in the Valley, the couple had repeatedly requested the administration to transfer them to a safer area.
He said that he had submitted an application to the Chief Education Officer of Kulgam seeking their transfer to a safer location. “As nothing happened despite multiple requests and applications submitted to the CEO, they met the Director of School Education in Srinagar on Monday,” he said.

Kumar and deceased Rajni Bala’s transfer orders came on Monday night and Tuesday was supposed to be her last day at the school in Gopalpora, he said.

He however, said that had the administration transferred her to a safer place earlier, she would have been alive today.

Meanwhile, protesters blocked the Jammu-Pathankot national highway demanding removal of officials responsible for failing to transfer the lady teacher.

Samba district observed total shutdown as a protest against the killing.

Additional Director General of Police, Jammu Zone, Mukesh Singh, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, BJP J&K president, Ravinder Raina and many others from police, administration and political parties attended the last rites of Rajni Bala.
