Newly infiltrated militant killed, as two gunfights rage  in Bandipora, Anantnag

Srinagar: A local militant who is believed to have infiltrated recently from Pakistan has been killed in an ongoing operation in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, police said on Wednesday.

The gun battle erupted between militants and security forces during a cordon and search operation in the Salinder forest area.

“As the search party proceeded towards the suspected spot, the hidden terrorists fired indiscriminately. This was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter,” a police officer said, adding that in the ensuing encounter one militant was killed.

A police spokesman identified the slain militant as Gulzar Ahmad Ganai, a resident of Wussan Pattan, Baramulla.

“..He #exfilitrated in 2018 & remained there for 3 years & 6 months before #infiltrating back in the last week of April,” a police tweet said.

Almost at the same time, another encounter broke out at Marhama Bijbehara in Anantnag district, also during a cordon and search operation.

Security forces have installed lights to ensure a tight cordon.
