Gusty winds, cloudburst wreak havoc in Kashmir; 4 killed

Srinagar: Four persons were killed and a woman injured while rooftops of several houses were blown away and other property damaged as cloudburst and gusty winds wreaked havoc in parts of Kashmir Valley on Thursday.

A woman and her two sons were killed after a cloudburst hit central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Monday late afternoon, officials said.

Those killed in the incident that took place at Chandapora village of the district have been identified as Boori Begum(45) wife of Mohammad Saleem Mansoori and their two sons Mohammad Rayees Mansoori (21) and Kaiss Mansoori  (17), residents of Khwaday  district Barali UP. The members of the family were working in a brick kiln in the area, the officials said.

Soon after the incident, the officials told GNS that the trio was shifted to district hospital Budgam where doctors declared them dead on the arrival.

A 34-year-old woman was killed after she came under tin-sheet blown away from a rooftop during gusty winds in Botengo area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Official sources said that the woman, Meenu Jan wife of Khursheed Ahmad, came under the sheet during a heavy windstorm near Habkhatoon petrol pump Batangoo and suffered serious injuries. She was shifted to GMC Anantnag where she succumbed to the wounds later. A police officer told GNS that a case has been registered.

In a separate incident, a 25-year-old woman identified as Shakeela Bano wife of Firdous Ahmad Mir of Lar Ganderbal sustained injuries after strong winds damaged rooftop of guardroom of Ziyazat Shah Sadiq Qalandar.

Due to windstorm and falling of trees, five electric Poles of Pulwama line got damaged. Power supply from Pulwama station shall remain affected till Tuesday, officials said. However, hotline and essential feeder have been charged via the Pampore Pulwama line, an official said.

Reports said that scores of residential houses got damaged while trees were uprooted due to strong winds in several areas of Bandipora, Sopore and Srinagar parts. However, no loss of life has been reported so far.

In Watapora area of Bandipora, gusty winds damaged the rooftop of a residential house. Similarly, In Sangrama, Sopore, and in some Srinagar areas, the roofs were blown off and trees uprooted due to heavy windstorms.

Moreover, in the Pattan area of Baramulla, two vehicles (JK04E 5070 Swift) and (JK014 7635 Alto) got damaged after a tree fell on them. Reports of damage due to windstorm were also received from south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
