Srinagar: Around 1.18 crore Aadhaar cards have been generated in Jammu & Kashmir till February 02 this year.
Documents in possession of The Precious Kashmir reveal that participants of 6th J&K Union Territory Level Bankers Committee (UTLBC) meeting held on March 30, 2022 were informed that 87.40% of the projected population (2019) of UT has already been enrolled in Aadhaar.
“The House was informed that upto 02.02.2022, 1.18 crore Aadhaar Cards have been generated in J&K, covering 87.40% of the projected population (2019) of J&K,” reads record note of the meeting.
Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)to the residents of India after satisfying the verification process laid down by the Authority. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident of India, may voluntarily enrol to obtain an Aadhaar number. The Aadhaar scheme is primarily aimed at improving the delivery of social security benefits and subsidies, plugging leakages and wastes, eliminating fakes and duplicates and enhancing transparency and accountability.
According to documents, the UTLBC was also informed that 79 % savings bank Accounts in J&K have been seeded with Aadhaar.
“As regards seeding of bank accounts with Aadhaar, it was informed that 79% of the total 1.39 Crore Savings Bank Accounts in J&K have been seeded with Aadhaar,” the record note states.
The UTLBC was chaired by chief secretary Arun Kumar Mehta and was attended by representatives of banks and UT’s top bureaucrats.
