Srinagar: Nearly 14000 kilometers of road length has been macadamized in Jammu and Kashmir from 2018-19 till November 2021, an official report has revealed.

Documents in possession of The Precious Kashmir reveal that 13969 kilometers of road length has been macadamized in J&K under different schemes and programmes since 2018-19.

As per documents, 2074 kilometers of road length was macadamized in 2018-19, 2289 kilometers in 2019-20, 5032 in 2020- 21 and 4574 kilometers till November 2021.

The report states that 15 percent of the road length under all sectors is macadamized annually in Jammu & Kashmir, leaving substantial road length for macadamisation in forthcoming years, in piece-meals, as per availability of funds.

These details are available in a report submitted by a high-level committee constituted by the government last year to come up with measures/ standard operating procedure for maintenance of roads during snow clearance.

The macadimisation of roads in J&K is undertaken annually by the Roads & Buildings Department for providing smooth road surface for commuters. Normally, the roads for which macadimisation has not been done during the last 3-5 years are taken up for renewal coats.

The macadimisation in UT of J&K is mainly done by way of providing 50 mm thick bituminous macadam and 25 mm thick semi-dense. The renewal coat is carried out by way of 25 mm/30 mm SDBC.

It is worthwhile to mention that J&K government is spending hundreds of crores annually for blacktopping and macadamisation of roads. In J&K UT’s annual budget, funds are being allocated for macadamisation of roads.
