Delimitation Commission to hold public sittings in J&K

Final draft to be presented in Parliament

Srinagar: The Delimitation Commission would hold public sittings at different places in Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory to consider the objections/suggestions received by it from different stakeholders.

The laws governing the delimitation exercise clearly state that the commission shall hold one or more public sittings for consideration of objections/suggestions on its draft report.

The public sittings would be held only after the deadline for submitting objections/ suggestions for general public is over. The draft report is expected to be put in public domain soon for getting feedback from general public and other stakeholders.

Officials told The Precious Kashmir that the Commission would come up with it final orders after the conclusion of public sittings.

“The Commission is likely to come up with its final orders in the month of April,” they said, adding that public sittings are likely to be held in the month of March.

As already reported, the delimitation commission is likely to get two-months extension to conclude its work. This would be the second extension to the body constituted on March 6, 2020 to redraw J&K’s electoral map.

The three-member body comprise of former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd.) Ranjana Desai, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and J&K State Election Commissioner Kewal Kumar Sharma.

According to the officials, the final orders of the commission, which shall have the force of law and shall not be called in question in any court, would be laid in the Parliament.

“As soon as may be after such publication, every such order shall be laid before the House of the People and the Legislative Assemblies of the States concerned,” reads the Delimitation Act-2002.

The delimitation in Jammu & Kashmir is being carried out under The Delimitation Acr-2002 and The Jammu & Kashmir Reorganization Act-2019.
