Construction of over 13% additional classrooms not taken up yet: GoI

Srinagar: The Government of India (GoI) has said that construction in more than thirteen percent of additional classrooms that were approved till March-03-2021 was yet to be taken up by the School Education Department.

The official documents revealed that at least 13.57 percent of additional classrooms were yet to be taken up by the department.

“In Jammu and Kashmir, approval for construction of at least 24,874 additional classrooms was given by the GoI till March-03-2021 wherein construction of 3377 was yet to be taken by the School Education Department; besides, construction of 1899 additional classrooms was also under-construction,” it reads.

It further states that the construction for 19,598 additional constructions was completed.

Likewise, the documents state that a total of 10,654 primary schools were sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir till March-03-2021 out of which only 9411 were completed.

“Among the total primary schools sanctioned, construction was yet to start for 1087 schools while 156 were still under construction,” it reads.

Earlier, KNO reported about the pending construction for hundreds of elementary level institutions that were approved in past years upto the 8th standard.

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL), GoI in an annual meeting of Project Approval Board (PAB) with the Ministry of Education (MoE) had said that construction in more than ten percent of primary and upper primary schools was yet to be taken up by the Jammu and Kashmir government.

The GoI has asked the Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department to surrender all the school buildings which await execution over the past many years. (KNO)
