Policeman injured in Nawa Kadal militant attack

Srinagar: A policeman was injured in a militant attack in Jamalata Nawa Kadal area of central Kashmir’s Srinagar district on Sunday.

Official said that the militants attacked a police party “during raid” in the area, leaving a policeman injured. The injured was shifted to hospital.

“Based on specific input about presence of (militants) in Jamalata area of Nawa Kadal, a raid was carried out by a small party of Srinagar Police in the area,” a police spokesman said.

“As the team approached towards suspected spot, the hiding (militants) started indiscriminate firing upon them, resulting in injuries to one Police personnel who was evacuated to nearby hospital for the treatment of his injuries,” the spokesman said, adding, “Keeping in view the safety of the civilians and evening rush in the area the police team exercised maximum restraint. However reinforcement of Police and CRPF laid cordon of the suspected clusters of houses and search started.”

Besides, the spokesman said Police have registered a case and started investigation into the matter.

Soon after the attack, the security forces intensified surveillance and area domination in the city, officials said.

More security personnel were deployed in Lal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk, TRC Chowk, Polo View and the areas around the city centre, they said.

Also random checking of vehicles and frisking of people were being done as part of the security drill.

The officer said that police and paramilitary forces carried out an area domination exercise in Srinagar.

Barricades have been erected on many arterial roads including the entry and exit points of Srinagar.
