Two militants killed in Kashmir gunfights

Srinagar: At least two militants were killed in separate encounters in Kashmir on Thursday, police said.

An unidentified militant was killed an encounter with joint team of police and army at Chawalgam area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Official sources said that one militant was killed in the “ongoing encounter”. However identity of the slain militant was yet to be ascertained, they said.

Earlier officials said that a joint team of Police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Chawalgam.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, they said, the hiding militants fired upon them, triggering off the gunfight.

“01 unidentified (militant killed. Operation in progress. Further details shall follow,” police said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, an unidentified militant was killed in a gunfight in Srinagar city on Thursday evening, police said.

They said the gunfight broke out when a joint team of Police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Bemina area of the city.

Police said one unidentified militant was killed in the encounter.

“01 unidentified terrorist killed. 01 AK rifle, along with ammunition, recovered. Search going on. Further details shall follow.,@JmuKmrPolice,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet. The search operation is underway in the area. (GNS/UNI)
