14 drug peddlers held as police intensify crackdown on smugglers

Srinagar: Continuing its war against drugs and intensifying action against drug dealings, police in a series of actions across Kashmir Valley have arrested 14 drug peddlers.

A police spokesman said that a huge cache of contraband substances and cash Rs 2.70 lacs have been recovered from their possession.

“In Pulwama, earlier three drug peddlers were arrested from Gudoora Bridge Newa and on their disclosure instant raid was conducted at the residence of one notorious drug peddler identified as Junaid Khurshid @Junni Katta, son of Khurshid Ahmad Dangroo of Zasoo Tahab. During raid brown sugar, huge quantity of poppy straw and cash Rs 2,70,471 apparently sale proceeds of drugs were also recovered from his possession,” the statement said.

He said that apart from the said notorious drug peddler, nine other drug addicts were also arrested in a series of actions in the vicinity. “In this regard, a case under FIR number 305/2021 under relevant sections of law stands already registered in Police Station Pulwama and further investigation is in progress,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, officers at a checkpoint established on Tahab Road intercepted an individual moving in suspicious circumstances.

During search, 1200ml of Codeine were recovered from his possession. He has been identified as Bashir Ahmad, son of Ab Ahad Ganai of Tahab Pulwama.

Accordingly, he was arrested and shifted to police station where he remains in custody. In this regard, a case under FIR number 308/2021 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Pulwama and further investigation is in progress.

In another instance, acting on specific information about drug dealings police party from Police Station Litter conducted a specific raid at Village Naina Batapora area of Pulwama.

During search, one Kg of Charas was seized from the residential house of one Khurshid Ahmad Koka, son of Gh Mohd Koka of Naina Batapora. Accordingly, a case under FIR number 112/2021 under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation in progress.

In Ganderbal, acting swiftly upon specific information, a police team led by SHO PS Kangan under the supervision of SDPO Kangan Yasir Qadri apprehended a drug peddler and recovered 140gms charas and 06 Kgs of Bhangpatri from his possession.

He has been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Bajard son of Fazal ur Rehman of Laman Wangath. Accordingly, a case under FIR number 132/2021 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Kangan and further investigation is in progress.

In Budgam, officers at a checkpoint established near Hardpanzoo Crossing intercepted 02 persons roaming suspiciously. During search, officers were able to recover 220gms of Charas from their possession and were arrested on the spot.

They have been identified as Firdous Ahmad Sheikh of Larbal Dassan & Nisar Ahmad Bhat of Harda Latina. Accordingly, a case under FIR number 156/2021 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Beerwah and investigation set into motion.

Meanwhile, police urged people to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood. “Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” police said.
