Srinagar: A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday, police said.
Troops of Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) following a tip off that a militant Anayat Ashraf was hiding in village Kashwa in Shopian after injuring a civilian Jaewer Hameed Bhat last night, a police spokesman said Thursday morning.
He said encounter broke out when security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village. All civilians in the adjoining houses to target area were evacuated. He was offered to surrender for whole night, but he didn’t surrender. Later on, during encounter the newly active militant got killed. One Pistol and ammunition were also recovered from his possession.
“Earlier, last night recently Dar who was earlier an Over Ground Worker (OGW) and also involved in drugs, fired upon a civilian Jeewer Hameed Bhat, who got seriously injured and is still hospitalised. Anayat was also threatening other people in and around his village with his illegally acquired weapons. After thorough interrogation of several suspects after the attack on Bhat and input from sources, a CASO was launched at village Keshwa,” the spokesman added.
