Police officer killed in Khanyar militant attack

Hundreds attend funeral prayers at Handwara

Srinagar: A Probationer Sub Inspector (SI) of Jammu and Kashmir police was killed in a militant attack in the down town Srinagar on Sunday afternoon. However, police said that the militants involved in the act have been identified.

Official sources said that SI identified as Arshid Ashraf Mir was coming out from a lane at Khanyar when militants fired at him from a close range.

SI collapsed and fell on the road after receiving three bullet wounds. According to CCTV footage of the area, which is viral on the social media, another person accompanying SI was seen rushing towards a three wheeler passing the area.

After failing to catch the three-wheeler, he returned and with the help of another person immediately shifted the injured police officer to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) where he succumbed.

Additional security forces have been rushed and entire area has been cordoned off, they said adding searches were going on when the reports last came in.

Senior police and CRPF officers also rushed to the area and visited the area where ASI was shot dead. Police has collected CCTV footage of the area, they said.

This was the first major militant incident in the Kashmir valley during September which remained by and large peaceful, barring two grenade attacks in which a CRPF man and a woman were injured.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people attended the funeral prayers of the slain SI at his native village in Handwara area of Kupwara district in northern Kashmir.

Amid tears, sobs, the slain was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard.
