Shopian residents protest against transfer of executive officer

Shopian: The residents of Shopian town in South Kashmir on Wednesday staged protest against the transfer of the executive officer municipal committee Shopian and demanded revocation of the order.

The protest led by traders federation, street vendors association, civil society and social activists took out a march from Jamia Masjid to Gole Chowk Shopian and demanded revocation of transfer order at an earliest.

Suhail Tariq, General Secretary Street Vendors Association said, “the developmental work which other officers failed to do in the last three decades, executive officer municipal committee Jahid Azad did in just three months.”

Magray Mansoor, a social activist, also echoed the same voice and said that for the first time the town has witnessed the officer who has taken several steps for the development of the area.

“There is a lot more to do but transferring him just after a few months is a decision which the government must reconsider,” Mansoor said.

Traders federation members also said that due to the posting of the officer, the issues which were pending since decades were solved and long pending demands were met in just a few months.

Locals also demanded that the government must look into the matter and revoke the officer’s transfer order for the welfare of Shopian town.

In last three months Jahid Azad had taken several steps for the welfare and beautification of town which includes rehabilitation of street vendors, gender based modular toilets, installation of water proof LED flashing light solar power, renovation of Heemal Nagraii spring, online birth and death certificates, door- to- door waste collection programme, construction of clock tower and others.

“Thanks for the love and unconditional support shopianites offered during my 113 days service as Executive Officer MC Shopian. I wish my transfer from MC Shopian will not slow down the pace of developmental projects in town from tomorrow onwards (sic),” Jahid Azad shared on his social media facebook page while sharing the transfer list.

“Congratulations and wish you all the best for your new assignment. But this is sad news and a big loss for Shopian. The District Administration must think of it. It was the golden era of Shopian Town,” a FB user Peerzada reacted to his transfer.

“Your tenure has been exceptional and full of professionalism and Honesty! Allah Bless you in your future endeavours (sic),” another user said.

“End of honesty and professionalism in municipal council shopian. Mafia is back with vigour and vengeance (sic),” another FB user posted. (KNO)
