Role of doctors pivotal in fighting pandemic: President

Lucknow: President Ram Nath Kovind said that the role of doctors has been important in the fight against the pandemic.

The President also appreciated the role of SGPGIMS in providing good medical facilities to the people.

He said that for those who are sick and taking treatment, the doctors are no less than angels for them. “But doctors should not be limited to Lucknow or UP, you are needed by the country and the world too,” he said.

Kovind, who was the chief guest of the 26th Convocation ceremony of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), here on Friday evening, said that in less than a decade, Sanjay Gandhi PGI has made a mark in medical education.

The President attended this program along with his wife Savita Kovind. He also gave away degrees to the students which was presided over by state Governor Anandiben Patel.

President Kovind said SGPGIMS has achieved fifth rank in NIRF ranking in medical category which is a sign of its special achievement.

“Now people of other states along with Uttar Pradesh also do not have to depend on Delhi for treatment. Here in SGPGIMS the laboratory did more than 20 lakh corona tests in 30 districts. Right now the battle with Covid is still going on. Mask and social distance is the first line of defense. Vaccination would be the best defence,” he added.

President said that this institute has been a pioneer in telemedicine. “Apart from research, the institute also has an important contribution in the treatment of patients. Now the time has come that other medical colleges of the state should also be made worthy of this. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is opening many medical colleges in UP, this institute can help in making them,” he said.

Around 116 students of the institute were awarded degrees which includes DM (40), MCh (18), PDAF (10), MD (33), PhD (2), MHA (5) and B.Sc Nursing (8) in various subjects.
