Jammu: The security has been stepped up across the Jammu division ahead of Independence Day celebrations, particularly around the Maulana Azad Stadium–the main venue of the function here.
However, alert has also been sounded around Indian Air Force base and all military establishments as drone threats loomed large across the region.
On June 27, two bombs were airdropped at high security zone of Jammu Air Force Station in which two IAF personnel got injured.
In the last more than one month, drone activity has increased manifold in various parts of Jammu region.
”As per intelligence inputs, militant outfits may attempt to carry out attacks in the region to disrupt peaceful celebrations of Independence Day,” a senior police officer said.
He said besides drone threats, infiltration attempts are also being made from across the border while alert security forces have also seized large quantity of arms and ammunition from various hideouts in the recent past.
”Security forces have foiled all nefarious designs of the Pakistan, which is out of frustration, trying to play spoilsport in upcoming Independence Day celebrations,” he said.
Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh during his visit to Rajouri district had said that Police and security forces have strengthened the anti-infiltration grid both at the Line of Control and hinterland to foil all attempts.
He also disclosed that launching pads are intact across the border where 250 to 300 terrorists are being trained and they are ready for infiltration.
”Launching pads across the border with the support of ISI and associated agencies are still active and around 250 to 300 militants are getting trained in the camps and attempts are being made to push them to this side,” the J&K Police Chief had said.
He also said that Pakistan is using drones for militant activities but J&K Police and other security forces have strengthened the counter security grid to meet this challenge effectively.
Stressing to strengthen the border, highway and hinterland security grid, the DGP directed the officers to formulate the comprehensive security plans for desired results.
However, joint teams of police, CRPF, Army, CAPF, SSB, BSF (on border) and other security, intelligence agencies are maintaining close coordination and high level of synergy to thwart any nefarious design of the enemy.
Special check points have been raised on Jammu-Pathankot, Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Poonch national highways and the vehicles are being frisked thoroughly, said an officer adding, ”night patrolling has also been enhanced particularly in border hamlets.”
Security is stepped up at the main venue for Independence Day celebrations in Jammu and no unwanted movement is being allowed around the complex.
All sports activities have also been suspended temporarily till the event takes place.
Moreover, air patrolling has also been augmented by Army helicopters and Air Force aircraft to maintain close vigil on every activity through high beam search lights.
Additional Director General of Police, Jammu Zone, Mukesh Singh also said that security has been beefed up in the region to avoid any untoward incident.
”We are receiving lot of intelligence inputs and acting on those, security has been tightened across the region ahead of Independence Day,” Singh said in a message.
He said that check points have been enhanced and night patrolling is also increased in all the districts, ”recently two militants were killed in an encounter in Thannamandi area of Rajouri and many such inputs are being received.”
”All the venues where National Flag is to be hoisted, are secured and under tight security cover,” he said.
The top cop asserted that hotels are being frisked and suspicious elements are also under check. (UNI)
