Hailstorm damages crops in Uri, farmers demand compensation

Uri: A hailstorm and strong winds, besides heavy rains caused huge damage to crops and vegetable farms in sub division Uri of North Kashmir on late Saturday night leaving farmers in distress over losses.

Local sources said that farmers are worried as their crops have suffered massive damaged due to the hailstorm.

Farmers told news agency Kashmir News Trust that they invested enough to high yield vegetable seeds, but the hailstorm destroyed their entire fields.

Apple, Walnut, Pear, maize and vegetables were damaged by hailstorm and rain. The worst affected villages include Nambla, Balkote, Garkote, Balkote, Salikote, Sohra, Mohthal, Hathlanga, Tilawari, Churanda, Batgrah, Thajal, Powdan, Syedpira, Uri Town and other parts.

The affected farmers have demanded an immediate compensation from the administration.

Meanwhile some political leaders and civil society members have also urged LG administration and DC Baramulla for a quick assessment of the damage and compensation to the worst hit farmers. (KNT)
