London: The experienced pair of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna won their first round mixed doubles match at Wimbledon 2021, here on Friday.
The duo defeated fellow Indians Ankita Raina and Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-2, 7(7)-6(5) in a historic and hard-fought contest.
It was the first time in open era that two Indian teams competed against each other at a Grand Slam tournament.
Mirza and Bopanna will now face the top-seeded French pair of Nicolas Mahut and Kristina Mladenovic in the second round on Saturday.
Sania has moved has also moved to women’s doubles second round with Bethanie Mattek-Sands while Raina and her American partner Lauren Davis lost in straight sets to the US pair of Asia Muhammad and Jessica Pegula on Thursday night.
Rohan Bopanna, meanwhile, lost his opening round match in the men’s doubles with Divij Sharan and are already out of the competition.
