COVID-19: Pregnant women as susceptible as common people

Expecting mothers must take extra caution as vaccines not recommended for them, should prefer tele consultation: Dr Renu Sharma

Srinagar, May 26: Pregnant women are as susceptible to Covid-19 as common persons and that they must take extra care as vaccines haven’t been recommended for them yet while they must prefer tele-consultation for minor issues to avoid contraction of Covid-19, experts said Wednesday.

Dr Renu Sharma M.D Obstruction, Gynecologist and senior consultant at Ankur Maitrika Hospital, Jammu, while talking to KNO  said that lockdown has been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir as well as across in the country to combat the corona virus and everyone including pregnant ladies have faced its brunt.

She said that pregnant women need a lot of care as vaccines haven’t been recommended for them in India, however, there is no need to panic.

Dr Renu said that amid lock down pregnant ladies are facing a lot of problems in getting treated, however, they must avoid unnecessarily visiting hospitals and should prefer tele consultation for minor ailments.

They have to follow the same precautions as that of common people and whenever they visit a hospital, they should avoid gathering and try to return home as soon as possible.

Asked why Caesarean cases are increasing each passing day, she said that such cases are increasing pregnant ladies reach hospitals at that stage due to Covid-19 when there is no other option left besides that many people prefer operations to avoid risk besides that change in lifestyle is also a reason for increase in the caesareans.

About surge in the abortion cases, she said that it depends on the genetic factors and uterus issues, however, she warned that girls should not use self-induced pills as that cause irregular periods, infection, bleeding and can affect future fertility.
