Woman set ablaze allegedly by in-laws succumbs

Anantnag: The woman who was allegedly set on fire by her in laws including her husband last week in Akura village of Mattan in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district succumbed late Thursday evening.

Shahzada wife of Mushtaq Ahmad and mother of two children, according to her parents, was set ablaze after being sprayed with kerosene allegedly by her in-laws.
She was taken to medical college Anantnag where doctors on the basis of severity of her burn injuries had referred her to SMHS hospital Srinagar for specialised treatment.

However, the woman, lost the battle for life after a week in the hospital triggering outrage over social media sites.

A relative of the deceased told Precious Kashmir that doctors treating her at the facility had already told them that the chances of her survival were very less.

He said that Shahzada breathed her last at around 10 pm but her body will be taken home for burial early Friday morning.

After the incident, in-laws of the deceased, had phoned her parents informing them that their daughter has set herself ablaze. However, her relatives had rejected her in-laws claims saying ‘They were trying to save their skin after committing the crime’.

Father of the deceased woman had told reporters that her in-laws since her marriage 12 years ago had been agonising her and subjecting her to worst forms of torture.

Precious Kashmir had carried a series of stories on the violence against the mother of two children.

Though the police have registered FIR into the incident and have arrested the husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law of the deceased for questioning, people on social networking sites are demanding severe punishment for them.

“RIP sister. Her killers should be hanged,” wrote Sameer Ahmad on facebook.
