Municipal councilor, cop killed in Sopore militant attack

Sopore: A Municipal Councilor and a policeman were killed and another councilor injured in a hit-and-run militant attack in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday.

Militants fired indiscriminately towards Municipal Council office, Sopore, where the municipal councilors and BDC chairman were scheduled to hold a meeting, at around 1.10 pm

In the militant attack, two municipal councilors Reyaz Ahmad Pir and Shams-ud-din Pir and a police man namely Shafqat Nazir were injured. The injured were evacuated to nearby hospital, where councilor Reyaz and cops Shafqat Ahmad succumbed to injuries.

Another injured councilor has been shifted to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment.

After the militant attack, police, CRPF and army men rushed to the area and launched search operation to track down the militants responsible for the attack.

Following the attack, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar visited PD Sopore and inspected the scene of militancy crime.

Thereafter, he chaired a security review meeting with Commander 5-Sector RR, DIG CRPF and SSP Sopore.

“The main focus of meeting was today’s attack and the necessary security measures to be taken to counter such attacks. While interacting with the officers, the IGP urged upon the participating officers that it is of crucial importance to enhance security of vulnerable persons and to take all necessary measures to thwart away the nefarious designs of militants,” a police spokesman said.

He said preliminary investigation indicates that a local militant Mudasir Pandit of LeT along with a foreign militant are involved in the attack. However, further investigations are rigorously going on.

IGP Kashmir also took serious note of the poor and inappropriate retaliation by the PSOs of protected persons present on spot and directed SSP Sopore to put four PSOs under suspension.

Later, a wreath lying ceremony was held at DPL Sopore where tributes were paid to the slain cop.
