Shopian encounter: Two Militants, Solider killed, one Army man injured

Operation on, may last till morning, have installed lights, tightened cordon layers, say officials

Shopian: Two unidentified militants and a solider has been killed in an ongoing encounter that raged between security forces and militants in Wangam village of Harmain belt in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.

A senior police officer told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Two unidentified militants has been killed, stating that his identity is being ascertained.

He added that two soldiers were also injured during exchange of fire, among them one identified as Pinku Kumar has succumbed to his injuries and another is undergoing treat. He said the operation is on in the area.

Earlier, an official said that a joint team of Police, Army’s 34 RR and CRPF launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

A police officer said that the operation may last till tomorrow morning given the dark.

“We have installed lights and tightened cordon layers to ensure the remaining militants don’t flee,” he said, adding that hiding militants are repeatedly being asked to surrender.
