Victim battling for life, police detain her husband, father and mother-in-law for questioning

Alleged violence on woman by in-laws

Anantnag: A day after the woman from Akura village of Mattan in Anantnag district was allegedly set ablaze by her in-laws, police have detained her husband, father-in-law and mother-in- law for questioning on Wednesday.

Shahzada Banoo wife of Mushtaq Ahmad, whose parents live in Badaran village of Aishmuqam and was married in Akura eight years ago was set on fire allegedly by her in-laws during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

The woman who is mother of two children has suffered serious burn injuries and is battling for life at SMHS hospital Srinagar where she was referred to by the doctors at GMC Anantnag.

Father and relatives of the woman after the incident had alleged that her in-laws were always agonizing her and subjected her to violence. “Her husband called us on phone and informed that Shahzada had burnt herself using kerosene oil,” father of the victim had alleged speaking to reporters.

A video of the victim shot by her attendants in the hospital also went viral on social media. In the video she accuses her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law of first beating her and then spraying kerosene and setting her ablaze.

Police soon after the incident had registered an FIR and initiated investigations. While the woman is battling in the hospital, police on Friday detained her husband and other in-laws for questioning.

“All the accused have been brought to police station and are being questioned,” a police officer said.

He said that they have also received the information that woman has set ablaze herself after verbal brawl with her in-laws.”We are investigating the incident thoroughly. FIR into the incident already stands registered. Whatever is established during investigation sections of the FIR may change accordingly,” the police official told Precious Kashmir.
