68 domestic tourists rescued from Sonamarg due to avalanche

Srinagar: The tourist resort of Sonamarg on Srinagar-Leh highway, remained cut off for the past few days due to fresh snowfall and avalanche.

Meanwhile, Ganderbal district administration in the central Kashmir alongwith Beacon rescued 68 domestic tourists who were stranded in different hotels in Sonmarg on Saturday.

A traffic police official said due to fresh snowfall and avalanches at certain places in Gagangeer area on the highway, road to Sonamarg remained closed.

The road was thrown open on February 24 after remaining closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow and avalanches. However, there was fresh snowfall and avalanches forcing authorities to suspend the traffic again.

However, a report was received that there are large number of domestic tourists stranded in hotels in Sonamarg.

Later, the Beacon authorities put into service sophisticated machines to clear the snow and put through the road again.

An official spokesman said the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ganderbal, Shafqat Iqbal along with Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ganderbal, Khalil Poswal on Saturday visited Sonamarg to inspect the Snow clearance operation, following recent snowfall in the area.

The snowfall resulted in the closure of Srinagar-Sonamarg road from past few days and triggered snow avalanches at certain places in the Gaganger area along the highway.
