Delimitation exercise in JK under cloud: Mehbooba

Srinagar: Former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday alleged that tearing hurry with which centre is railroading delimitation in J&K has raised genuine and serious apprehensions about the motives of this exercise.

She further alleged that it is a part of BJP’s large plan to divide and pit regions, religions and communities against each other.

Mehbooba was reaction to reports that Delimitation Commission chairperson Justice (Retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai will be visiting Jammu and Kashmir shortly as the Union Ministry for Law and Justice is set to extend her term beyond March 5. Reports further claimed that the Commission is likely to invite suggestions on delimitation and reservation of Assembly constituencies in the Union Territory in writing from the political parties.

“The tearing hurry with which GOI is railroading delimitation in J&K has raised genuine & serious apprehensions about the motives of this exercise. It’s a part of BJPs larger plan to divide & pit regions, religions & communities against each other,” she wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

National Conference (NC) Members of Parliament (MPs) Dr Farooq Abdullah, Muhammad Akbar Lone and Hasnain Masoodi on Wednesday expressed their inability to associate with the Delimitation Commission, urging it not to go ahead with the process as the J&K reorganisation act 2019 is under judicial scrutiny in the Supreme Court (SC). The MPs asserted this in a letter to Chairperson Delimitation Commission Justice (Retd) Desai.
